Who would’ve thought a year ago this time that a new Democrat House majority would be down on its knees seeking approval from a 29-year-old self-described socialist and then have its members looking over their shoulder whenever something displeases her?
It’s exactly the situation Democrats face today, as each week brings a new controversy with the de facto leader of the American leftist movement. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez engenders almost as much media attention as President Donald Trump these days, the main difference being most of AOC’s coverage is positive and flattering while Trump’s remains decidedly negative and disparaging.
No worries. Media bias is par for the proverbial course in today’s establishment-dominated world where simply identifying as a conservative or wearing a “Make America Great Again” hat can get you punched in the face by leftists with anger issues and a sense of empowerment to stifle God-given First Amendment free speech rights.
No doubt Ocasio-Cortez experiences no such fear of physical or verbal retribution for her philosophical excesses. AOC’s the Democrats’ and their media enablers’ darling to the point where she threatened to promote primary challenges for “moderate” party members if they didn’t toe-the-line — and people actually took her seriously. It happened last week.
Katelyn Caralle of The Washington Examiner reported, “Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, D-N.Y., threatened Thursday to put Democratic colleagues that vote Republican ‘on a list’ for primary challenges.
“The progressive freshman representative suggested in a closed-door meeting of House Democrats that she would help liberal activists unseat moderate Democrats skirting the party line, a spokesperson for Ocasio-Cortez said according to the Washington Post.
“’She said that when activists ask her why she had to vote for a gun safety bill that also further empowers an agency that forcibly injects kids with psychotropic drugs, they’re going to want a list of names and she’s going to give it to them,’ spokesperson Corbin Trent said, referring to U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement.”
That’s right. If a Democrat with a conscience and weakness for law enforcement (if there are any left, that is) dares cast a vote — even a politically convenient or symbolic one — with his or her GOP colleagues they should expect reprisals and perhaps even a wrathful mob of in-your-face, pushing, chanting, sign-carrying leftists situated outside their office doors the following day. Holding traditional principles is a dangerous thing in today’s Democrat circles where strict adherence to politically correct doctrine is not only expected, it’s demanded.
And you heard it right, Democrats, AOC’s watching you and taking names. It certainly looks as though the New Yorker’s universal presence on social media and the cable news shows has instilled a sense of invincibility in her; she’s so bold as to make public threats to her own liberal colleagues and Washington swamp creatures just scurry out of the way.
Who does she think she is, Eva Perón? The similarities between the two young socialists are striking, from their decidedly leftwing politics to their meteoric rise to cultural hegemony at approximately the same age. Who knows, with AOC’s already oversized ego she probably envisages a Broadway musical (starring Madonna?) to open in her honor… Don’t cry for me Alexandria?
Caralle’s article indicated (at the same meeting) Nancy Pelosi called out the 26 Democrats who joined Republicans to amend an anti-gun bill to include special notice (to ICE) for illegal aliens who try to buy firearms. What shame! That’s a double no-no for Democrat House members — one, to meaningfully aid immigration enforcement and two, vote to alter one of the leadership’s Second Amendment-bashing proposals.
Again, who would’ve believed Pelosi’s most willing and powerful enforcer would be someone who hasn’t yet turned thirty? And isn’t thirty the new twenty? If that’s the case then Democrats are now maneuvered by a “leader” who’s more than a little wet behind the ears, a media fashioned monster who commands microphones and cameras at the drop of a…tweet.
Seeing as powerful leftists have long histories of eliminating political competitors who get a little too uppity in challenging their authority, maybe AOC should be the one regularly looking behind her. If she calls for heads on a platter because some poor Democrat schlep occasionally jumps over the reservation line (and votes with the hated GOP), the next noggin to fall just might be her own. Madame Pelosi will only tolerate this nonsense for so long before she calls the Bronx bigmouth into her office for a little one-on-one tongue-lashing and attitude correction.
Threatening primary challenges is an American political tradition and both sides do it (conservatives have battled the RINO establishment for years). At the same time, conservatives realize some Republicans will occasionally depart from pro-liberty positions in order to save their political rear ends. For those in so-called swing districts, it’s expected… but not necessarily condoned.
For example, both Reps. Elise Stefanik (R-NY) and Jaime Herrera Beutler (R-WA) — two young female GOP House members — went along with Democrats on the resolution disapproving of Trump’s national emergency declaration. In Herrera Beutler’s case, she represents a wishy-washy district where appearing “bipartisan” is considered a good thing. Meanwhile, stalwart conservative/libertarian Rep. Justin Amash (R-MI) also sided with the Democrats in this instance, though nobody would think to unseat him in a primary for being too liberal.
Ocasio-Cortez apparently reasons her putative urban background and experience takes precedence over the views of Democrats from areas of the country where seeing gun rights — or immigration — is apart from her own. She and others like her are rapidly yanking the electoral viability out from under their party…which is terrific for Republicans and conservatives.
Perhaps Democrats see AOC as a younger, more attractive and ultimate successor to Bernie Sanders. Last weekend the Vermont senator officially launched his presidential campaign on a mission to completely transform the United States. Bridget Johnson reported at PJ Media, “Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) officially kicked off his 2020 presidential campaign [last Saturday] by resurrecting a pledge to defeat not just President Trump but ‘Wall Street, the insurance companies, the drug companies, the military-industrial complex, the prison-industrial complex, the fossil fuel industry, and a corrupt campaign finance system.’…
“’Donald Trump wants to divide us up by the color of our skin, our country of origin, our gender, our religion, and our sexual orientation. We are going to do exactly the opposite,’ he said. ‘We are going to bring our people together – black, white, Latino, Native American, Asian American, gay and straight, young and old, men and women, native-born and immigrant.’”
And Bernie and AOC are just the ones to do it too! The Bern claims he has over a million campaign volunteers awaiting marching orders, the goose-stepping frontline forces in the new American socialist army headed straight for a college campus near you! And judging by his kickoff speech, he intends to pit corporate America against everyone else. Oh, the horrors!
Recent polls show Sanders leads his Democrat competitors in New Hampshire. If he’s able to make a decent showing in Iowa and then win (again, as he did in 2016) in the Granite State’s first-in-the-nation primary, the near-octogenarian socialist will almost assuredly be around long enough in the race to cause trouble for the Democrat establishment. You can almost sense the trembling in Joe Biden’s camp!
Is Sanders merely running to pave the way for candidates like Ocasio-Cortez to offer more plausible campaigns in future years? If leftists keep talking up socialism as a good thing there’s bound to be plenty of brainless young stupids who buy into it. Could Bernie be on a kamikaze mission to soften the ground for the budding socialist star?
Things are quickly changing for today’s Democrats. One minute they’re rallying behind the old guard (represented by Nancy Pelosi and creepy “Chucky” Schumer), the next they’re clinging to young radicals like AOC. Who will prevail in the struggle to control the liberal party’s future?
